God preserves His people for special purposes. His purposes are not always clear to us, but in time, He reveals His plan—for our benefit and His glory.
As the children of Israel prepared to enter the promise land after 40 years of wandering in the desert, Moses admonished them not to follow the ways of the inhabitants of Canaan. For, as Deuteronomy 18 records, God detested their idolatry and practices of witchcraft, sorcery and spiritism. God would, however, raise up a prophet like Moses; and to this prophet, the people should listen.
"The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him. This is according to all that you asked of the LORD your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, 'Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, let me not see this great fire anymore, or I will die.’ The LORD said to me, 'They have spoken well. I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. ‘It shall come about that whoever will not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him.” (Deuteronomy 18:15-19)
In Acts 3:22 and 26 Peter affirmed, in his second recorded sermon after the day of Pentecost, that the prophet Moses had spoken of was Yeshua, the Messiah of Israel.
"Moses said, ‘THE LORD GOD WILL RAISE UP FOR YOU A PROPHET LIKE ME FROM YOUR BRETHREN; TO HIM YOU SHALL GIVE HEED to everything He says to you… For you first, God raised up His Servant, and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways.”
Stephen, some time later, in the sermon that led to his stoning, repeats the claim that Christ was the fulfillment of this prophecy.
"This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, `GOD WILL RAISE UP FOR YOU A PROPHET LIKE ME FROM YOUR BRETHREN.'
(Acts 7:37)
How is Yeshua like Moses? What is the significance of their commonalities? Why is His fulfillment of such prophecy so important? In this series, we will examine several key points:
- Both were preserved in childhood in a unique way
- Both contended with masters of evil
- Both fasted forty days
- Both controlled the sea
- Both fed a multitude
- Both had radiant faces
- Both endured murmurings
- Both were discredited in the home
- Both made intercessory prayers
- Both established memorials
- Both reappeared after death.
